Acne: What Causes It and What Can I Do About It?

There are all different types of acne: whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nobules, and cysts. One thing that they all have in common though is they are unsightly, painful, and everyone just wants them gone! It’s important to know what can cause acne and how to get rid of it!

There are several things that cause acne so let’s explore them and their remedies.

Dead Skin, Blocked Pores & Excess Oil Production

Skin is a living, breathing thing and as it dies, it leaves behind dead cells that block pores and can lead to acne. To help remove dead skin, try using a gentle exfoliator about once per week. You don’t want to do this too often because it will be too rough on your delicate skin, but once per week will help keep those pores clean and clear of debris. As for oil, it is naturally secreted through our skin to keep our skin moisturized, but too much oil can lead to breakouts because it’s a breeding ground for bacteria. The trick to decreasing the oil you naturally produce is to moisturize. Moisturizing will help your skin from overproducing sebum.

Stress

Internal stressors such as depression, anxiety, and fear can trigger reactions inside of your body that lead to breakouts. External stressors can really take a toll on your face too. External stressors include things such as oily makeup and too much sun exposure. To combat your stressors, try to practice relaxation techniques, and get plenty of rest and sleep.

Hormones

Many women notice breakouts the week prior to their menstrual cycle due to hormone levels. With hormonal acne, prevention is key. If you sense you are about to get a breakout, try switching to a   cleanser with salicylic acid and keep a cream on hand to spot treat any problem areas. Make sure the cream contains benzoyl peroxide.

Bacteria and Yeast

Bacteria and yeast are zit causing problems that live in the pores, where they multiply, thrive, and cause irritation. Benzoyl peroxide is known to combat the problem, but there are also foods you can eat that will help fight the bacteria. These foods include: garlic, coconut oil, honey, turmeric, ginger, lemons, and pineapples. Did you find this article helpful?
