The Amazing Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil seems to be all the rage these days but people of tropical islands have been on to this hidden gem and they consider it to be the secret to beautiful hair. Coconut oil is loved by many because it’s 100% natural and free of silicone, alcohols, and other chemicals that can be harsh on sensitive skin and hair. It works wonders and can repair hair that is naturally dry or has been damaged due to over-processing or heat.

Coconut Oil as a Deep Conditioning Treatment

Start by putting a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil into your hands. Taking small sections at a time, gently massage the oil into your clean, damp hair and scalp. If your hair tends to get greasy, or is thin, it’s best to skip massaging the oil on your scalp. As you are massaging, add more oil in areas where it’s needed, such as very dry areas of the hair or damaged follicle ends. Make sure hair is evenly coated and allow it to sit on your hair for about 30 minutes.

To get the maximum benefit of the deep conditioning treatment, you may want to cover your hair with a shower cap and wrap your hair in a hot towel, fresh from the dryer. You may also apply heat from a hair dryer for a few minutes to achiever similar results. Those with severely dry, damaged hair may want to leave the treatment on for longer periods of time, or even overnight. Remember, coconut oil is a very heavy oil and therefore you will need to shampoo the oil out after you are finished with your treatment.

Coconut Oil as a Daily Hair Moisturizer and Detangler

After showering, you may apply a very small amount of coconut oil to the ends of your hair. This will work as a great, natural detangler. If your hair is very dry, you can follow the same protocol. Just make sure to use a minimal amount of oil so that your hair doesn’t end up looking greasy or weighed down.

Coconut Oil as a Dandruff Treatment

Coconut oil is anti-fungal in nature, which makes it the perfect, natural anti-dandruff treatment. It can also be used as a preventative treatment for dandruff. To use as a dandruff treatment: massage a small amount of coconut oil into your scalp and allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes.  Follow the treatment with a good shampooing to remove the oil. You may also choose to let the coconut oil sit overnight for an even deeper treatment. Just make sure you wear a shower cap when headed to bed so you don’t get grease on your pillowcase. Shampoo in the morning, once your treatment is complete. Do you use coconut oil on your hair? What are your favorite tips and tricks to this wonder worker?
