Candida and the Connection to Hair Loss

Have you experienced hair loss? If so, you are not alone! There are several reasons why we suffer with hair loss, and Candida is one that people often overlook.

Let’s take a look at the major reasons people experience hair loss and things we can do to minimize the loss.

Inadequate Nutrition of the Follicles

When you are insufficient in various nutrients, your body naturally gives the vital nutrients to your organs first, and then whatever it has leftover goes to other parts of your body, such as your hair. Fewer nutrients going to your hair will lead to hair loss.

Not only does malnutrition give you a deficiency, but stress also plays a big role. The higher the stress, the more nutrients your body requires. The high demand for nutrients again means that your hair follicles are not going to have their needs met.

When you think of circulation to your scalp, think of it as the food your cells need to grow healthy, full hair. The good news is that you can indeed increase the circulation to your scalp! Simply massaging your head and scalp with your fingertips while shampooing your hair in the shower can do wonders. The massage stimulates blood flow and can increase circulation.

Genetics

Unfortunately, the most common cause of hair loss in men and women is male/female-pattern baldness, which is a hereditary condition. The pattern of the baldness tends to follow a similar course and happens slowly over time. Men typically will notice bald spots or a receding hairline and women will notice thinning hair.

A scary thought for some that have this running in their family is that pattern baldness can start as early as puberty! Look at members of your family to see when they typically start experiencing hair loss because this will give you insight as to how rapidly the loss could occur, the extent of hair loss, and at what age you could start noticing changes.

Male-Pattern Baldness

The usual course of male-pattern baldness is as follows:

  1. Hair at the temples begins to recede (thin), while hair at the crown becomes thin.
  2. The bald patch slowly forms in the middle of the scalp and joins the receding sides. This creates the first patch at the front of the scalp.
  3. The growth cycle starts to drop which causes hair follicles to become smaller as it produces shorter, finer strands of hair.
  4. Ultimately, the growth cycle for each follicle comes to an end and hair will no longer grow.

It’s important to note a few facts about male-pattern baldness:

  • Male-pattern baldness accounts for 95% of all hair loss in men.
  • Before the age of 21, 25% of men will already be in the process of male-pattern baldness.
  • 2/3 of American men will have hair loss to some degree by the age of 35.
  • By the age of 50, a whopping 85% of men will have noticeably thinning hair.

Female-Pattern Baldness

While women also experience pattern baldness, the course it takes isn’t the same as that in men. Women typically notice thinning either at the top of the head or a general thinning over their entire scalp equally. Men typically start experiencing hair loss earlier on in life than women, as most women start noticing hair thinning once they enter menopause. Hair loss in women also usually increases with age and will be higher for women with a genetic history of hair loss. As mentioned above, roughly 85% of men will notice hair loss while by the age of 70, only about 1/3 of women are experiencing pattern baldness.

Frail Immune System

Think of your body’s immune system as our system of defense. Its job is to support good health and if it doesn’t keep up its end of the bargain, our body responds with symptoms and illnesses. Let’s take the millions of microorganisms (body flora) that live on our skin and in our mouth and intestines for example. They are there to protect us from being infected by dangerous microbes. However, if these microbes multiply beyond the normal range because of a compromised immune system, or if they start growing in areas of the body where they don’t typically grow because of poor hygiene or injury, the result can be many, many diseases.

Your pH Balance

If your body’s natural pH is out of whack, the candida can grow rampantly, which creates a systemic problem. We get sick when the balance is off kilter with the good microorganisms that naturally live in our body. This is very evident in the scalp and you will start to notice dandruff, itching of the scalp, oily hair, and hair loss.

When candida grows out of control in your body, it is called Candida Overgrowth Syndrome, or COS. This is a serious problem and is a chronic health condition. People who have been otherwise healthy may notice that they start experiencing frequent yeast infections, food sensitivities, or other allergies such as dairy, eggs, corn, and gluten.

How Your Body Reacts to COS

When your body grows too much candida, several things happen.

  • The sebaceous gland is activated, which leads to an overproduction of oil. When you produce too much oil, we shampoo as means of ridding the scalp of the excess oil. This will weaken our scalp defenses and hasten hair loss.
  • The skin renovation and desquamation process is also activated, which causes flakes, dead skin, dandruff, and itching. You may think anti-dandruff shampoos would be the answer but they actually stop the body’s natural defense mechanism and when that stops, the scalp will start to deteriorate, become an unhealthy scalp. This will also lead to hair loss.
  • As we discussed, our immune system is our body’s system of defense. It’s always at work trying to balance the overgrowth of candida while simultaneously utilizing many nutrients. This process is a delicate balance and vitamins and minerals can quickly be depleted. For this reason, it is crucial to address the internal factors that speed up hair loss.

Solutions

The good news is that there are things you can do to slow down or minimize hair loss. First, give yourself a nice head and scalp massage every time you shower. We touched on this earlier in the article, but not only is the massage relaxing and soothing, but it triggers your body to increase circulation in your scalp. Good circulation means good hair growth!

At Authentically Branded, we know that healthy hair is something everyone wants. We have created all of our products to be gentle and nourishing to every hair type to aid you in your quest for healthy, luxurious hair.

All-Natural Treatment Oil

Our All-Natural Treatment Oil is formulated with peppermint, soybean, and almond oils. The peppermint oil is used to balance the pH of your scalp, which will prevent dryness. When the Treatment Oil is applied to the scalp, it hydrates and gets rid of dandruff causing germs. It also acts as an astringent and controls oily scalp while increasing blood flow, resulting in a healthy scalp.

The almond oil provides many nourishing and smoothing benefits. When the Treatment Oil is massaged into the hair, it helps your hair retain moisture, which keeps hair from splitting. The almond oil ingredient also conditions hair follicles and creates a healthy shine. The high level of vitamin E is great for conditioning the hair.

Soybean oil is the third, very versatile oil used in our product. The soybean oil component deeply moisturizes as soybean oil is able to penetrate deep into the cuticle. Rich and dense with protein, soybean oil will strengthen your hair over time. It also works to revive the hair for a soft and healthy shine.

To use our All-Natural Treatment Oil, simply apply oil to your fingertips and massage the scalp vigorously. Brush or comb through hair shaft. For optimal benefits, use sparingly and let it serve as a leave-in, or leave on for 15-20 minutes. Wash out with salon recommended shampoo.
